This is the first art gallery that I go
actively and pay it by myself. The feeling I had is totally different with
teacher-guiding or free-of-charge one. I would rather involve in the gallery
andpay attention since no one conducted me and I paid for it.
The gallery divides into four periods which
are 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. When I started walking from 1950s to 1980s,
I could discover the changes and growth of Andy Warhol’s drawing style and techniques.
In 1950s, he left for New York after graduated; his drawings are simple and
monochrome; many spaces are left. But gradually from 1960s onwards, he was
influenced by lifestyle of New York; his drawings are more mature and polychrome;
full of ideas is included.
Talking about Andy Warhol, everyone will
think of the Campbell’s Soup Can series and Marilyn Monroe’s portrait. However,
for me, the most remarkable artwork in the gallery is not these.
I agree that 1960s is the most
important period for Andy Warhol because all my favorite drawings were created
at that time.
Silver Liz’s portrait made me
stop to go forward since I was attracted by her beauty. No matter her facial
features, hair or makeup, everything is best in the painting. Especially from
her eyes, I always feel that she has lots of words to say, just like a
temptation to make you step forward to gaze at her and talk with her.
Flower and Electric chair are the
other two impressive pieces. Although Andy Warhol are excellent in using
colours to make contract and matching, colours in these two paintings are more
naturally-used. When I looked at them, I felt more comfortable when comparing
with Marilyn Monroe’s portrait or other pieces. This difference caused may be
because of the power of cool and warm colours.
In the later part of Andy Warhol’s artistic
creation (1970s-1980s), I thought that he was excessively engaged in his social
network. The majority of his artworks are celebrities’ portrait and his self-portrait which are too much and lose his initial purpose of drawing
them. Although he also has some collaborative paintings, the impression I felt
is much fewer than those paintings drawn in 1960s.
“POP ART IS FOR EVERONE”, that is what Any
Warhol left to us. I hope this spirit can spread to everyone in Hong Kong.
People who have not seen this gallery, please do not miss this chance. You may
find lots of impression or inspiration after going to this gallery, just like
me.
