This is
the artwork which I select to talk about in my final paper. Of course, it is
illustrated by my chosen artist – MARUMIYAN.
Firstly,
I would like to talk about the meaning behind. This artwork is titled as
MONGREL which a negative word describes a mixture that is or appears to be
incongruous. From facial appearance of the women, we can see that she disdains
to do something but with sorrowful expression in her eyes. Perhaps this is what
the artist wants to bring out – the ironic feelings of mongrels. Although they have
heard many unpleasant words, they pretend that they are proud of themselves –
just like the leopard on her head.
Actually,
MARUMIYAN draws a series of this kind of artwork – a woman wearing a hat full
of plants and animals. Another example is called AFFECTATION which is also a
negative word. From my point of view, what he wants to express from this
artwork or this series is the phenomena appeared in the Japanese society. No
matter what MONGREL represents the mixture of different breed or social levels,
people will use special judgment to see them.
Secondly,
I would like to discuss the painting style or design of this artwork. I have
mentioned before that MARUMIYAN always likes to add lots of flowers, birds,
butterflies, wings and other natural elements. Moreover, his world is brightly
coloured. Actually, his artwork has somehow related to surrealism since animals
will not turn into a hat wearing on a woman’s head. I notice this point because
I discover his idea is similar to a British artist called Josephine Wall who like to draw surrealsim paintings. That I will further talk
about in my final paper.

Well, honestly speaking, it's 'mongrel' which dragged me in... As mentioned, the artist expressed the struggle of pretending-to-be-proud when being hurt by others words. I was surprised. The works the artist produced were composed of pleasant colors and composition, like those in Alice in Wonderland. However, the message behind is kind of weary....
ReplyDeleteIt's similar to most of us today. We have to hide our true feelings while facing some harsh comments, just to behave 'good' or to act tough. And it's also has relation to racism to...I think. the fantasy-like drawing style is my favourite though.:))
I like both the pieces and I think they are comparable. Both the art works are colorful and vibrant yet the meaning behind is so negative. Also, the main character in the work are girls but not boys. Maybe there are some meanings or symbolization behind.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the background color and the lighting of MONGREL is blank and it is very different from the two paintings of MARUMIYAN, who likes to have forest for the background. MARUMIYAN seemed to hide a bigger irony in his work. You can work more on that.
All in all, good choice!!
Well, I like the part talking about the meaning of MONGREL. From the women's cool face, body's gesture, glance as well as the leopard, I agree that this woman is pretending calm as well as being proud of herself. However, she is unhappy actually.
ReplyDeleteThese two pictures imply the problems of discrimination in Japan society. How could they be solved? Hope these problems could be relieved as soon as possible, everyone is human beings no matter how after all.
Oh, Thanks the information about surrealism. I am interested in the characteristic of surrealist works and what visual effect surrealist works would bring to us. Looking forward to your next paper.
The piece that you select is eye-catching and elegant. It expressive the negative word MONGREL in a beautiful and positive way by using bright colours and natural elements of flowers and animals.
ReplyDeleteI like your explanation of the meaning behind with the facial expression of the women.
One thing that can be improve in your final paper is that you can elaborate more on the phenomena the art work expressed which you have mentioned and the reason why the artist want to express this social phenomenon on his piece.
Besides, you may also include some information of the material or media and technicque of the work and discussion the reason for the choice. The impression to others can also be included in the paper.
Hope my comment can help you in writing your final paper:)

DeleteDear Sidney,
ReplyDeleteIn your presentation you were particularly impressed by how this work was made in software. In our class we didn't talk so much about digital image making, but can you identify characteristics in Marumiyan's work that is unique to the medium? In your opinion what is he able to do with the help of technology that wouldn't be possible in traditional media? Also I think you can further analyze the complex elements hidden in the image and also talk about the composition, how there are very dense areas contrasted to open areas. How is the artist skillful in also creating the total balance of the image?
